Hayatı
Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1836 yılında Hollanda’da Dronrijp köyünde doğmuştur. Hollandalı bir noterin oğluydu. Ailesi baba mesleğini devam ettirmesini istese de Anvers Akademisi'ne sanat eğitimi almaya gönderirler. Akademide Hendrik Leys'in yanında 1852 - 1858 arasında sanat eğitimi alır. 1861 yılında "Clovis Çocuklarının Eğitimi" (The Education of the Children of Clovis ) adlı ilk büyük çalışmasını yapar ve ün kazanır. Diğer yıllarda tarihten esinlenerek çeşitli konulu resimler yapar.
1863 yılında İtalya gezisi sırasında Eski Yunan, Roma ve Mısır Sanatına ilgi duyar. Lirik, şiirsel anlatımla Antik günlük hayatını resmeder. Dönemin en tanınan ve beğenilen ressamlarındandır.
1863 yılında Fransız eşiyle birlikte Brüksel’e yerleşir. 1869 yılına kadar orda yaşar ve eşinin ölümünden sonra iki kızıyla Londra’ya gider. Ünlü bir ressam olarak Londra’da hayatı boyu yaşar. 1873 yılında İngiliz vatandaşlığına geçer ve 1899’da da sör lük unvanını alır. 1879 yılında Kral Akademisi’nin üyesi olur.
